“Do all of you happen to share the same dream for your future?”
“We would like to earn money by running a buisness together in the future.”
“Isn’t there a chance you will end up hurting your friendship if you run a business together?”
“We are still young and innocent, so we don’t know such things. Will I really run away with all of our money?”
“저희는 고3같은 반 친구인데, 야자에 찌들어 있다가 내일부터 연휴라서 한번 이렇게 쉬러 나왔어요. 자주 못 나오거든요.”
“혹시 같이 공유하는 꿈 같은 게 있나요?”
“저희 나중에 동업해서 돈을 벌고 싶어요.”
“동업하면 서로 마음 상할 수도 있지 않나요?”
“저희는 아직 순수해서 그런 거 몰라요. 제가 정말 돈을 들고 튈까요?”
"My picture? Ah, I’m a little camera shy."
"사진이요? 아, 부끄러운데.."
“If you look at people you will see we are really naive .”
“Naive?”
“Humans are tremendous creatures, but we just live taking what is given and doing as we are told. Since we live without thinking, we created a dog eat dog world for nothing speical or big. Try taking a look at us in the universe.”
“사람들은 어떻게 보면 참 순진해.”
“순진하다구요?”
“인간이란 건 엄청난 존재인데, 그냥 주어진대로, 시키는 대로 살아. 생각없이 살다보니 별거 아닌 일가지고 치고 박고 싸우는거야. 우주에서 우리를 바라봐봐.”
“What is the bravest thing you’ve done in your life?”
“When I was 15, I was a social outcast. There were about 60 kids in my class, and the teacher would consistently beat me. The other students never treated me as their friend. ”
“Why did the kids treat you that way?”
“If the teacher taught us something that wasn’t right, I alone would tell her it was wrong. The kids were so afraid of the teacher that they didn’t want anything to do with me. My parents also didn’t get me, so I decided to commit suicide. The heorines in my romance novels always died so sadly from pneumonia that the 15-year-old me thought that was a good way to go. In order to catch pneumonia I wore really thick coats in April and purposely went outside in the rain.”
“And then what happened?”
“I didn’t die of course. Instead I decided to live, confronting my obstacles. I don’t regret my decision at all though.”
“가장 용감했던 순간이 언제였나요?”
“15살 때 전 왕따였어요. 그 때는 한 반이 60명이었는데, 선생님은 절 상습적으로 구타했고, 아이들 모두가 절 왕따시켰어요.”
“왜 아이들이 왕따를 시켰나요?”
“선생님이 뭔가 잘못된 걸 가르치는데 저만 그건 아니라고 했거든요. 아이들은 선생님이 무서워서 절 왕따시켰구요. 부모님도 절 잘 이해하지 못 하셔서, 저는 죽기로 결심했어요. 로맨스 소설을 보면 주인공들이 폐렴 같은 병으로 가련하게 죽잖아요. 제 15살의 감성엔 그게 좋았나봐요. 그래서 폐렴에 걸리려고 4월에 두꺼운 코트를 입고 일부러 비를 왕창 맞았어요.”
“그리고 어떻게 됐나요?”
“물론 전 죽지 않았고, 대신 꿋꿋하게 살아남기로 했어요. 절대 그 결정을 후회하지 않아요.”
“I’m 85 years old. I was a teacher at an elementary school in Namwon, Jeolla-do, and then I’m came to Seoul.”
“Are there any pupils that you especially remember?”
“There were in the past. However, those students have one by one passed away so I don’t feel like remembering. I’ve never experienced anything as sad as that. They are eternally children to me.”
“내가 85세야. 전라도 남원에서 초등학교 교사를 하다가 서울로 왔어.”
“특별히 기억나는 초등학교 제자가 있으세요?”
“예전엔 있었어. 근데 그 제자들이 하나 둘씩 죽었어. 그래서 기억하기가 좀 그래. 그거 만큼 슬픈 일이 없어. 나한텐 영원한 아이들이었거든.”
“We are 17 year old high school students.”
“Is there any time in your life you wish you could go back to?”
“One year ago. Middle school and high school are so different. We have to go to school so early, go to a mandatory afterschool study class, and the tests are difficult. It was good when we just needed to cram for exams. Actually, right now we are playing hooky from our afterschool study class. Ah, we shouldn’t be doing this..”
"저희는 17살 고등학생입니다.”
“인생에서 돌아가고 싶은 순간이 있다면, 언제인가요?”
“1년 전이요. 중학교와 고등학교가 너무 달라요. 등교 시간도 너무 이르고, 야자도 해야 하고, 시험도 어려워요. 암기만 하던 때가 좋았어요. 사실 저희 지금 야자 째고 놀러 가고 있어요. 아, 이러면 안 되는데..”
“The happiest moment of my life?” I was happiest when I was in high school and my friends and I played hooky from our required after school study session.”
“What did you do with your friends?”
“We talked. I just wanted to talk with my friends. That really made me happy.”
"가장 행복했던 순간이요? 저는 고등학교 때 친구들하고 같이 야자 땡땡이 치고 돌아다닌 게 제일 행복했어요."
"그 때 친구하고 뭘 하셨어요?"
"이야기요. 친구들하고 이야기를 하고 싶었어요. 정말 그게 행복했어요."
“She’s a recluse, so every day I need to take her out. She lives in Seoul, yet this is her first time coming out to a place like this. She likes things like reptiles and bugs, so we came here with an alligator stuffed animal as well. Hey! Why do you keep hiding? By the way, she’s particularly good at catching flies.”
“이 누나가 히키코모리라서 제가 맨날 끌고 나와요. 서울 사는 데 이런 데는 처음 와 본대요. 이 누나가 파충류, 곤충, 이런 걸 좋아해서 악어 인형도 같이 들고 왔어요. 누나! 왜 자꾸 피해. 아참 이 누나 특기가 파리 잡기예요.”
“What do you like the best about your younger sister?”
“It’s nice that she’s always willing to play with me.”
“여동생의 뭐가 제일 좋아요?”
“항상 저랑 같이 놀아줘서 좋아요.”
“What is the happiest moment of your life?”
“I have a pile of soju bottles in my fridge that I drink alone at home. That makes me happiest. However, my friends look at me mournfully when I drink at home alone, whereas I really am actually happy.”
“가장 행복했던 순간이 언제였나요?”
“저는 집 냉장고에 소주병을 쌓아놓고 혼자 집에서 마셔요. 그게 제일 행복한데, 친구들은 집에서 제가 혼자 소주 마시는 걸 처량하게 보더라구요. 전 진짜 행복한데…”
“You want to interview me? I’m a bit old so I can’t…”
“But you look young.”
“Age is only a number, but lately my back and knees have started to hurt…”
“절 인터뷰 하시려고요? 제가 좀 나이가 많아서 안 되는데….”
“젊어 보이시는데요?”
“나이가 숫자에 불과하긴 한데, 요즘 허리하고 무릎이 아퍼서…”
“People often ask me what I do here at Cheonggyecheon. Since when has reading a book at a place with good atmosphere looked strange?”
“사람들이 저한테 여기 청계천에서 뭐하냐고 자주 물어봐요. 분위기 좋은 데서 책 읽는 게 어색한 시대가 벌써 왔나요.”
